Why were they created?

We think that a computer interface which would let us interact with software and digital content items, through manipulating their physical representation,  holds great potential for creating and exploring sound, music and visuals.

As an example, such an interface could be used to change the audio routing between a collection of VST effect plug-ins, through changing the placement and orientation of real-world objects that represent them.

Besides unlocking a new world of audiovisual expression, they let you create and explore sound, music and visuals through hands-on interaction, experiencing and listening, instead of “working” with the computer.

These possibilities for interaction can stimulate and empower artists to create new and unique work, whether it be in the studio, in live performances or in art installations.

Such an interface is called a Tangible Interface, and because there were none available that worked without complicated setup and were portable and affordable, we decided to create AudioCubes.
